The title was Muguruza’s first Grand slam, and it comes two years after she won her maiden title as a professional.
It was a revenge of sort as the 22 year-old was denied the Wimbledon championship by Serena in 2015.
Wimbledon 2015 was the last major trophy won by Williams. She crashed out of the US Open in the semi-final and also lost the Australian Open of this year to the German Angelique Kerber, as she chases Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles.
Williams had to dig deep to get this far in Paris.
On Friday, she fought her way through into the final with a 7-6(7), 6-4 effort over 24-year-old Dutchwoman, Kiki Bertens, ranked 58th in the world.
She also came from a set behind to win on Thursday in the quarterfinals against 60th ranked Yulia Putintseva.
It turned out she needed more than her will power to beat the in-form Spanish Garbine Muguruza, who won her first major title today, two years after she won her maiden title at the 2014 Moorilla Hobart International.
Her major title included the 2015 China Open.
Muguruza had shown she meant business right from the first set when she broke Williams twice en route clinching the first set 7-5.
In the second set, she broke Williams in her first game and even though Serena broke back, the Spaniard soared to a 3-1 lead and eventually wrapped up the match 6-4.
